The Theme Foundry Theme Options

The Theme Foundry Theme Options

This was submitted by Andy Adams of The Theme Foundry, so publishing my thoughts here. The interface is close to what one would expect from a Theme Options panel which is good, though the usage of the metaboxes UI for sectioning might not be the best approach. Meta boxes are for different purposes.

One might also argue that the social profiles have nothing to do with Appearance and should be in Settings or Users, though I understand that it’s not always possible to take them with you to a different theme. However, a widget might, if it was in a plugin. I don’t have a strong opinion on any of the different ways here.

Post your thoughts and suggestions in the comments section, and don’t forget to rate this entry! Thanks :)

  1. Thanks for the writeup, Konstantin. Our theme options aren’t too exciting, and there isn’t too much there by design.

I agree that meta boxes are typically used for different purposes, but I also don’t think it detracts from the usability too much.

For the social icons, I’ll agree with you. It would be nice if there was a core/universal way to support social networks. We’ve toyed with the idea of writing our own plugin that integrates tightly with our themes, but we’re still not sure how we’ll improve that whole setup.

  2. I personally don’t like any theme that abusing the dashboard with a glamour enormous famous wannabe theme options page. I tend to never look again to any kind of theme that using that kind of page. Simple is great, there’s always a beauty in simplicity …

Regards to all those theme options developer. My advice: THINK AGAIN
